Iceland Trip Planning

Iceland is one of the most rewarding places on earth to travel — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Weather closes roads without warning. Highland tracks are off-limits until late summer. The gap between accommodation that suits your route and a booking that adds two hours of backtracking is a real danger. Getting the logistics right matters here more than almost anywhere else.

I spent four years living and working in Iceland, and return two to three times a year for my work as a travel journalist. I've covered the country for National Geographic Traveller, Condé Nast Traveller, and The Times, and authored guidebooks for Intrepid, Bradt and DK.

As a Fora-accredited travel advisor, I can help plan your Iceland trip — designed around your travel style, experience level, and group size. I have access to hotel programmes and partnerships that translate into direct value for you, including room upgrades, hotel credits, and early check-in at properties where I have advisor relationships.

Iceland Atlas — Services

Choose your service

Every service is a flat fee — no hidden commission, no incentive to push pricier options. Tour and accommodation recommendations always favour smaller, locally-run operators, where the guide tends to know the terrain personally.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • For the Itinerary Review, you'll have written feedback within five working days of sending your plan. For a Custom Itinerary, allow 7–10 working days from the point I have everything I need from you. Full Trip Planning takes a little longer, up to three weeks, to account for hotel and tour bookings.

  • Only if you choose Full Trip Planning. With a Custom Itinerary, I provide detailed accommodation recommendations and you book directly. The difference is that Full Trip Planning clients access Virtuoso, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Marriott STARS, and Preferred Hotels programmes through my Fora advisor network — complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, early check-in, and hotel credits to use while you’re there.

  • A Custom Itinerary includes one round of revisions; Full Trip Planning includes up to three. Significant changes beyond that can be accommodated at an agreed additional fee. Full Trip Planning clients also have access to me throughout the trip itself for any last-minute adjustments due to weather closures, road conditions, and anything that requires a change of plan on the ground.

  • Travel dates, approximate budget, group size, and a rough sense of what you want from the trip, whether it’s hiking, remote landscapes, hot springs, a mix of everything. The more honest you are about your travel style and pace the better the result. I'll send a short questionnaire after booking to gather the details I need.

  • Planning fees cover work already done and are non-refundable once work has begun. If you need to cancel before I've started, a full refund is available.

  • You'll receive a confirmation email straight away. I'll follow up within 24 hours with next steps specific to your service — a questionnaire for Custom Itinerary and Full Trip Planning clients, a calendar link to choose your call time for the Orientation Call, or instructions for sending your itinerary for the Review. Make sure to keep an eye on your spam folder just in case.
